Originally, Black Friday was not that event after Thanksgiving we used to talk about. It had a religious meaning and originated in Christianity. Friday was martyrdom day for Jesus, and 13 was considered as an ominous number traditionally, which gives credence to the idea that something bad would happen on that day.

The first time use on record of “Black Friday” was describing the financial crisis, particularly the collapse of the US gold market in 1869. On that Friday in September, the stock market plummeted, bankrupting everyone from Wall Street tycoons to farmers.

Generally, the “Black Friday” that we often mention now refers to the shopping-related Event after Thanksgiving. Some people remembered that the term“Black Friday”was originally used to describe the terrible traffic congestion during the day after the Thanksgiving Feast.

However, the retail-related story behind this event much more widespread. Stores in America used to write down how much money they made and how much they spent. They would write down money they made in black ink and how much they spent in red ink. As demand for all kinds of goods surged after Thanksgiving and before Christmas, Stores were hoping to make a lot of money, and their accounts were smeared with black ink, that’s why people call a day “Black Friday”.

As the tradition has spread far and wide, “Black Friday” gradually became to a node for shopping. It has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States since 2005, and its impact has been expanding.
